About the Position

Rhode Island Hospital, part of Brown University Health, is seeking a dedicated Radiologic Technologist to join our team. Under the supervision of the Lead Technologist, you will perform a variety of technical radiologic procedures using standard, portable, and specialized x-ray equipment. Your role includes applying prescribed ionizing radiation to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating patients’ illnesses and injuries. Additionally, you will ensure proper patient positioning, maintain the cleanliness and organization of your work area, and perform routine clerical tasks.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Transferring, positioning, and instructing patients for radiographic procedures to obtain diagnostic results as specified by the physician.
  • Ensuring proper protection of unaffected body areas using lead shields in accordance with safety standards.
  • Selecting appropriate technical factors such as voltage, current, exposure time, and focal distance, based on patient size and condition.
  • Assisting physicians during specialized exams, including the preparation of syringes and contrast media.
  • Operating x-ray equipment and reviewing processed images to ensure acceptable quality for diagnostic purposes.
  • Using portable x-ray equipment in patient rooms, surgery, and other areas where patients cannot be transferred to a regular treatment room.
  • Maintaining proper completion of films, examination requisitions, and related records for patient identification and billing purposes.
  • Adhering to ALARA radiation safety principles and exchanging personal dosimeters as required.

Requirements

  • Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Current and valid license from the Rhode Island Department of Health.
  • Ability to operate all types of x-ray and related equipment, push portable equipment, and transfer/position patients.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients, considering their aging processes, development stages, and cultural needs.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This role involves working in the main Radiology Department or satellite operations. While exposure to radiation is inherent, hazards are minimized by following established safety protocols. Continuous standing, walking, pushing of portable equipment, and lifting/positioning of patients are required. Some exposure to odors and chemicals from automatic film processing equipment may be experienced.
